Titanic from Paola Gaianigo

PLANNING AND DELIVERING A CULTURAL TEACHING UNIT

 

A lessonplan for Italian students of English from Paola Gaianigo.

  • help students reflect on class discrimination between the poor and the rich and social rules in the English society at the beginning of the 20th century
  • get students to reflect on the value of life and human responsabilities in great losses of lives

The unit is cross-curricular in so much as its themes will also be dealt with by the Italian teacher. He/she will deal separately with the Vajont disaster on 9th October 1963 in Italy, using the film “Vajont” and the book “Sulla pelle viva” written by the journalist Tina Merlin.

PREREQUISITES

Cultural: basic geographical and historical notions about the British Isles and the United States.
Linguistic: past tenses and time phrases.

OBJECTIVES

Educational:
Students will:
1) experience group work and helping weaker students to participate in it
Cultural:
Students will:
1) learn about a tragical event in British history and be able to report and comment on it in L2.
Linguistic:
Students will:
1) review and practise past tenses
2) expand their vocabulary regarding sea travel

MATERIALS REQUIRED

blackboard, OHP, TV and DVD player, Titanic DVD (enclosed), authentic materials such as newspaper articles, reading passages and pictures of the ship downloaded from the
Internet (enclosed), booklets “Titanic” by Tim Vicary (enclosed), map, exercise sheets
(enclosed).

SKILLS

Language skills:
the skills to be developed are the four basic linguistic skills: listening, speaking, reading and writing.
Life skills:
understanding, inferring, answering questions orally and in written form, extensive reading (skimming), intensive reading (scanning), memorizing, summarizing, using the dictionary.
